What is aluminium foil tape?
Aluminium foil tape is a pressure-sensitive, heat and moisture resistant tape with a solid aluminium foil backing, used to seal seams on insulation, ductwork, vapour barriers and foil-faced boards – a reinforced 48mm × 45m roll adds a fibre mesh layer for greater tear resistance across HVAC and construction applications.
How to apply aluminium foil tape
- Clean and dry the surface before you start – aluminium tape will not bond to dust, grease or damp substrates.
- Peel the release liner and press the tape down in one clean run with firm, even pressure.
- Run a hand roller or plastic squeegee along the full length to push out air pockets and ensure full contact.
- Overlap every joint by at least 25 mm on both sides of the seam.
- On HVAC ductwork, let the tape lie flat – do not stretch it across seams or it will peel back under thermal movement.

Used in conjunction with insulation moisture barrier from same company. It sticks the sheets together very well and then stuck them to the wooden shed, in blazing heat and didn’t peel off. I’m not expecting it to stick totally everywhere to a porous resinous surface like a shed but so far it’s dead firm. Supplemented with drawing pins so it’s doesn’t end up hanging down but I’ve ordered a second roll. It’ll stick to pretty much anything. Good value.

I was wrapping my central heating boiler with foil backed insulation and Aluminium foil tape, the tape repeatedly came unstuck however this was only evident the next day when I returned to view my repair.The maker of this tape resolution was return the product, at this stage return the tape which was almost competent used up. I spent hours wrapping my boiler. Very disappointing product and disappointed with the manufacturer response, I can only say do not buy this product you’re wasting your money.

Firstly, the product description said the tape had good heat resistance and was applicable to any kind of heating duct repair work. I bought it because the reviews were good, to mend a small hole in a metal chimney duct. I made a good neat job and was fairly confident all would be well.Secondly, the tape was very thin, so whoever reviewed it previously saying “you will need a knife” was either lying, or had another product. Mine came with no safety instructions or warnings, and no product packaging or manufacturer’s advice.Anyway I gave it a try.After a while I started to smell something like burning paint. I figured the adhesive was probably burning off so I thought I would give it some time and probably all would be well. I was wrong! After about 20 minutes I heard a rushing noise and saw smoke billowing from the tape site: it was catching on fire. I had to act very quickly to avoid a very serious fire incident.I am not someone who knows nothing about fire: as a potter I am well aware what things burn at what temperatures. This tape was very thin, like cooking foil with adhesive on the back. Even my cooker never burns foil when I am cooking meat in the oven. This stuff started to smoke and then was on the point of bursting into flames, well below that temperature that would roast meat. The adhesive is a worry. And the lack of manufacturer instructions. Don’t buy it. Keep safe.
