What does UC2 treated timber mean?

UC2 (Use Class 2) is a timber treatment standard for wood used internally where there is a risk of occasional wetting, such as within wall structures or roof spaces. The pressure treatment process drives preservative deep into the timber to protect against rot and insect attack. UC2 treated timber is not rated for external above-ground or ground-contact use — UC3 or UC4 treatment is required for those applications.

Do I need to treat cut ends of UC2 timber?

Yes. Cutting timber exposes untreated end grain which can absorb moisture and compromise the preservative protection. Wherever you make a cut, reseal the exposed end with a suitable timber preservative or end-grain treatment to maintain the UC2 protection across the full length of the batten.

Is rough sawn timber the same size as the stated dimensions?

Rough sawn timber dimensions are nominal rather than precise finished sizes. The actual dimensions may be slightly smaller than the stated 25 x 50mm due to the sawing and drying process — this is standard for carcassing and structural timber in the UK. If exact finished dimensions are required, planed timber (also known as PAR — planed all round) would be the appropriate alternative.
